Chautauqua pistol packets still run through Mayville

Chautauqua pistol-permit applicants should follow the Mayville office packet route before assuming an online-only process.

Chautauqua County pistol-permit work still has a real Mayville paper trail. The local route sends applicants to download and print the permit application, get fingerprinted, complete the packet carefully, and mail or drop the packet at the Pistol Permit Office at 3 North Erie Street in Mayville with the county license fee.

That is easy to miss if you live closer to Jamestown, Dunkirk, Fredonia, Westfield, Silver Creek, or the lake towns and assume the whole thing is just a web form. The same office also handles certain updates by mail or drop box, with copies, envelopes, and fees spelled out.

The neighborly advice is not to improvise. Keep a copy of what you send and let the official packet decide what belongs in the envelope. Mayville remains the practical hub even when the applicant lives closer to Lake Erie or the Pennsylvania line. Firearm licensing can involve state law, county handling, background checks, and a judge’s decision, so this is only routing guidance. It is a map to the right packet, not advice about applying.
