Chenango County Code Enforcement Has Local Exceptions
Chenango County says it enforces building and fire code for most municipalities, but not Greene, Earlville, or Norwich.

Chenango County’s code-enforcement note turns on the exceptions. County materials identify its Fire and Building Code Enforcement Department enforces New York State Fire and Building Codes for all municipalities in Chenango County except the Town and Village of Greene, Village of Earlville, and City of Norwich.
That is easy to miss because “county code” sounds like it should cover the whole county. For a project in most Chenango municipalities, the county may be the correct building-code route. For Greene, Earlville, or Norwich, the opening assumption should be checked before forms, fees, or contractor dates are set.
Start with the municipality, more than the mailing address. Then call the county or local code office that actually covers the property. Keep the address, project type, parcel if known, and any prior permit record together.
The small story here is the exception list. Three place names can change the opening phone call, and catching that early is much better than learning it after the paperwork has already gone to the wrong desk. A Greene, Earlville, or Norwich address should get a routing check at the start of the project file. A different local office may mean a different form, fee path, inspection calendar, or person to call.
