Manhattan Residents Should Check the Parking Tax Exemption
Some Manhattan residents can reduce monthly garage tax if the vehicle, address, and use meet city rules.

A monthly Manhattan garage space is normally taxed at 18.375%. An eligible Manhattan resident can remove the 8% city surcharge, lowering the tax to 10.375%.
The vehicle must be individually owned, registered to the owner’s primary Manhattan home, used only for personal driving, and kept in a rented Manhattan space for at least one month. Commercial, rental, and company vehicles do not qualify.
The lower rate does not begin just because the driver is eligible. NYC Finance must approve the application and issue a certificate. Give the bottom part of that certificate to the garage or lot. Payments made before the facility receives it are not exempt, and Finance says it cannot issue refunds for those earlier payments.
Keep the Finance form, vehicle registration, proof of the primary home, garage agreement, exemption certificate, and monthly bills together. Ask the garage which bill will first show the 10.375% rate.
