Mirror Lake sits right downtown, and the High Peaks start nearby

Confusingly, the lake right in the middle of the village isn’t Lake Placid at all, it’s Mirror Lake. Main Street runs along its western shore, and a flat, scenic loop of about 2.7 miles circles the water through downtown. People walk, run, and bike it in summer, paddle and swim the lake itself, and in winter a plowed ice track wraps the perimeter. The village limits boats to hand-launched craft and electric motors, so the water stays calm and quiet.
The village is also the front door to the Adirondack High Peaks. The High Peaks Wilderness Complex covers more than 275,000 acres and holds Mount Marcy at 5,344 feet, plus Algonquin Peak and dozens of other tall mountains. Many hikers use Lake Placid as their base for the famous “46” High Peaks.
If you’re heading up a trail, conditions in the mountains can change fast and some popular trailheads now require reservations. Before you go, check current trail conditions, parking rules, and the Hike Smart NY safety tips on the state’s official High Peaks pages.
