New Homeowners Should Register for STAR Once the Home Is Primary
After buying a primary residence, register for STAR promptly instead of waiting for the benefit to appear on its own.

A new owner should not treat STAR as automatic closing-table magic. The state Tax Department tells new homeowners, or owners not receiving a STAR benefit on a current home, to register as soon as the home becomes their primary residence.
After registration, the state determines whether the owner qualifies for Basic or Enhanced STAR credit. The STAR resource page also explains that new homeowners register for the credit, while the older exemption is no longer available to new homeowners.
The practical checklist is short: confirm the property is your primary residence, gather owner and income information, register with the state, and keep the school-tax bill handy. If you bought from someone who had an exemption, do not assume their benefit transfers to you. For a real errand, keep the question narrow. Start with Star, then use New Homeowner to decide which office, map, portal, or form is next. In Star, that local label can save a second call. A good habit is to write down the address, parcel, bill, ticket, or deadline before calling. Star Star is the local handle to keep.
