Putnam DMV is appointment-first, with a midday pause

Putnam County DMV customers should plan around appointment-only service, the lunch closure, and the drop-box exceptions.

Published July 6, 2026 · Last verified July 6, 2026

Putnam County DMV is not a casual walk-in errand for most tasks. The office runs Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but it closes from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. The county also says transactions are by appointment, except for plate surrenders and dealer or PSB drop-offs.

That makes the planning pretty plain. A license, permit, registration, title, or ID errand should start with the appointment link, not with a hopeful drive to the office. A plate surrender or qualifying drop-off may have a different lane, and the after-hours drop box can help when the paperwork fits it.

The midday closure is the detail that can spoil a good plan. Carmel, Brewster, Mahopac, Cold Spring, and Putnam Valley are close enough that people may try to squeeze the errand into lunch, but that is exactly when the counter pauses. Before going, sort the task into appointment, plate surrender, dealer or PSB drop-off, or after-hours box. Putnam County gives residents a workable route. It just asks you to choose the route before the keys are in your hand.
