Sherburne has a small-place origin story with a little music in it. Early settlement took place near the confluence of the Chenango River and Handsome Brook around 1792, and the village was incorporated in 1830.
The town history adds that Sherburne was formed from Paris in Oneida County on March 5, 1795. It also says the name was suggested because early inhabitants were in the habit of singing the tune Sherburne, a favorite among them.
That keeps Sherburne from blending into a line of Route 12 villages. Its identity is part river junction, part early Chenango County settlement, and part remembered song name. It is a small detail, but it gives the place a bit of music instead of just a date and a map dot.
The Chenango River and Handsome Brook make the origin story easy to picture. Add the old tune, and Sherburne feels less like a label on the road and more like a settlement with a remembered voice. The name almost hums a little once you know the story, and the river-and-brook setting gives the tune a place to land. It is the kind of small fact that changes how you read a sign: the name carries a little community memory from people who liked to sing together.
