Ulster pistol-permit questions split between Sheriff, Clerk, and State Police

Ulster pistol-permit errands are clearer when new permits, transfers, and state recertification are kept in separate lanes.

Ulster pistol-permit errands do not all go through the same door. A new-permit question goes toward the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office. A transfer out of Ulster County uses the County Clerk mailing route, two amendment forms, and payments to the two counties involved. Recertification is a State Police lane.

That split matters in a county with Kingston, New Paltz, Saugerties, Ellenville, Wallkill, Marlborough, and a lot of smaller-town drives. Calling the wrong office first can waste a half day, especially if the answer is simply that you need a different form or a different counter. The mailing address and payment split are not details to reconstruct from memory.

Write the task at the top of the paper: new application, transfer out, transfer in, recertification, amendment, or status check. A person moving from Ulster to another county should not treat that like a fresh first-time application. This is only a map to the official doors, not legal advice. The porch version is simple: Sheriff, Clerk, and State Police are not interchangeable labels here, especially around Kingston paperwork.
