Tucked above the Hudson on North Broadway is one of the great surprises in Yonkers: Untermyer Gardens. It was the estate garden of Samuel Untermyer, a famous lawyer who set out in the early 1900s to build what he hoped would be the finest garden in America. The centerpiece is a grand Walled Garden in a Persian style, with a long stone-lined Vista that steps down toward the river.
For years the grounds fell into neglect, but the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy has been bringing them back, working with the City of Yonkers, which owns the property. Today you can wander the Walled Garden, the Color Gardens, and the Temple of Love, then catch the wide-open view of the Hudson and the Palisades beyond.
The garden works because it feels both formal and a little secret: walls, steps, clipped plantings, river air, and a long view west. Admission is free, so Yonkers keeps one of its grandest views open as an everyday walk, not just a special-occasion estate tour.
That everyday part matters. A restored estate garden can sound formal on paper, but here it is also a neighborhood place to wander, sit, and look out over the river.
