Wayne County Taxes Move After March

Wayne County town and county tax bills start with town collectors in winter, then move to the County Treasurer after March.

A Wayne County property-tax bill changes hands as winter turns into spring. The January bill can include county, town, and special district taxes. It may also carry unpaid school or village taxes from an earlier due date, so the total can look less simple than a new owner expects.

During January, February, and March, town and county taxes are payable to the town tax collector. Wayne’s guide puts the winter schedule plainly: January is without penalty or interest, February adds 1 percent interest, and March adds 2 percent interest.

April 1 is the handoff. After that date, the payment route moves to the Wayne County Treasurer in Lyons. When delinquent town and county bills reach the Treasurer, the guide lists a 5 percent penalty and 1 percent interest for each delinquent month. It also notes later filing, enforcement, advertising, and foreclosure steps for taxes that remain unpaid.

For a buyer, seller, or heir sorting papers in Wayne County, the question is not just the amount due. It is who has the bill this month. Put the town collector, Treasurer, parcel number, bill year, and payment date on the same page.
