Winfield is one of those towns whose shape makes more sense once you look at the borders. It sits in the southwestern-most part of Herkimer County, bordered by Litchfield and Columbia in Herkimer County, Bridgewater in Oneida County, and Plainfield in Otsego County. That puts Winfield at a county-edge corner rather than in the middle of the usual Mohawk Valley mental map.
The road pattern gives it another handle. U.S. Route 20 runs east and west, Route 51 runs north and south, and roads such as Burrows, Stone, North, Meetinghouse, and Wall branch into the local map. West Winfield sits near the western edge, with East Winfield and Chepachet to the east.
The town was founded in 1816, and the current map still has that older road-and-farm feel. Agriculture has long been the leading industry, with small farms and larger dairy operations still part of the place. Add the Memorial Park near North Winfield Creek and the northern branch of the Unadilla River, and Winfield feels like a working road-and-farm town with water, schools, services, and county lines all close by.
