Yonkers Income Tax Is Not Just for Residents
Westchester taxpayers should check Yonkers resident and nonresident income-tax rules if they live or earn there.

A Westchester move or job change can create a Yonkers tax question. Yonkers residents file the Yonkers resident income tax surcharge with their state return. A nonresident must file Form Y-203 if they are not a Yonkers resident, earned wages or carried on a trade or business in Yonkers, and are required to file a New York State income tax return. The Y-203 instructions add that spouses who are both subject to the Yonkers nonresident earnings tax each file a separate Form Y-203.
Look at resident status, work location, withholding, and part-year changes before filing.
Build a narrow file for Yonkers: state Tax Department: New York City, Yonkers, and MCTMT, the exact income tax or nonresident tax, the date searched, and the address, parcel, account, citation, or application number that made the question come up.
A compact trail usually does the job: source, date, record name, and the office family behind it, which here means state Tax Department. Yonkers income tax or nonresident tax questions get easier when the date, office name, and identifying number stay in the same folder.
