Cattaraugus Back Taxes Shift to the Treasurer

Cattaraugus taxpayers need to know when a bill is still local and when a delinquent bill belongs with the County Treasurer.

Cattaraugus County’s treasurer route depends on the tax calendar. The Treasurer serves as the county tax enforcement officer and becomes the collection agency for local governments when taxes become delinquent.

The county delinquent-tax page explains the handoff. Town and county taxes stay with local collectors from January through March. Unpaid bills move to the County Treasurer on April 1. City, village, and school taxes may move later or be re-levied.

Before paying, identify the tax type and year, then confirm which office is collecting it now. Keep the parcel number, bill year, balance quote, office name, and date checked together. A bill that was local in March may be a county matter in April, and school or village bills can follow a different path. If the amount looks old, ask which collector has it today before sending money or promising a payoff at closing. County staff can also confirm whether penalty, interest, or re-levy steps changed the amount. Keep the calendar with the tax bill, not in memory. January, April, school-tax season, and a closing date can all point to different offices, and the collector named on an old bill may no longer be the collector who can take payment.
