New Hunters Should Finish Education Before License Season
A new New York hunting license starts with the required hunter education certificate, and in-person courses can fill before season.

If this is your early New York hunting season, do the education step before shopping for tags. DEC says the New York hunter education course is required to purchase a hunting license in the state.
The course covers safety, laws, wildlife, outdoor safety, hunter ethics, and responsibilities to landowners and the public. DEC also warns not to wait until just before hunting season, because in-person courses fill quickly. Bowhunting deer or bear has an additional bowhunter education requirement.
The practical plan is to decide what you want to hunt, check whether hunter, bowhunter, trapper, or waterfowl education applies, register early, and keep the certificate information with your DECALS account and license paperwork. It is much easier to do that in the calm months than during the week when everyone suddenly remembers opening day.
This is also good neighbor behavior. New York hunting happens around farms, forests, family land, public land, and roads where other people are out walking, working, and driving. The education course is not just a hoop to jump through; it is part of being safe, legal, and welcome in the places where hunting still fits into local life.
