Onondaga Town and County Taxes Split by Calendar

Onondaga County says current town and county taxes start with local collectors before April, then move to the county after April 1.

Onondaga property-tax questions need a calendar check before a phone call. The county Real Property Tax Services payment page says current-year town and county taxes are paid to the town tax receiver or collector between January 1 and March 31. After April 1, those taxes are sent to Onondaga County for collection. That handoff matters for homeowners, buyers, and anyone trying to clean up an old bill before a closing.

Start by writing down the tax year, parcel or property address, municipality, whether the property is inside Syracuse, and the date you are asking. If the bill is still in the January-through-March window, start with the local receiver or collector. After the handoff, use the county payment page and county Finance route for delinquent county or town taxes. The assessor can explain value and exemptions, but the assessor is not the payment counter. A calendar check keeps the call short and keeps a late-March question from being routed like an April one. It is also a useful early step before comparing escrow notes or old receipts.
