Queens Buildings May Be on a Gas Piping Inspection Cycle
Many Queens buildings need periodic gas piping inspections, with timing tied to the property's community district.

Queens owners should know whether their building is on NYC’s gas piping inspection cycle. NYC Buildings says most buildings need gas piping inspections at least once every four years. The main exceptions are one- and two-family homes and buildings classified in occupancy group R-3. The inspection year depends on the property’s community district. The work must be done by, or under, a licensed master plumber. This is a calm-check item, not a reason to panic. For a co-op, rental building, or mixed-use property, confirm the community district and keep the paperwork with building records.
The community-district schedule is the part many owners miss. A Queens building may be subject to the cycle unless it falls into one of the exceptions. That means the obligation is tied to both building type and geography. For a board, landlord, or buyer, the practical question is not just “does the building have gas?” but “which cycle is this property in?” For Queens, New York City Department of Buildings records, licensed master plumbers, community districts, occupancy group R-3, and four-year inspection cycles all matter.
