Schoharie County driveway work should respect the road edge

Schoharie County roadside projects work better when culverts, driveways, and county-road access are treated as highway questions early.

Schoharie County roads run through valleys, hills, farms, hamlets, and flood-aware places where drainage is not a side issue. When a driveway, culvert, shoulder cut, or road opening touches a county road, the county road system enters the picture.

The Department of Public Works carries that highway lane. Organized as a successor to the county Highway Department in 1977, it includes a Highway Division responsible for 322 miles of road and 91 bridges. The public works materials list driveway/culvert and highway-use permits.

A town permit or building plan may still matter, but the public road edge has its own logic: sight distance, ditch flow, plow room, pavement, and safe access.

Before the job gets scheduled, gather the road name, address, nearest cross street, sketch, photos, and whether water already collects near the driveway. That small file gives a resident, contractor, or farm owner a cleaner first call.

Schoharie County is beautiful partly because the roads follow the land. That same land makes the road edge important. A driveway is not just an opening; it is a place where home, water, and traffic meet.
