Schoharie pistol permits start at the Sheriff office
Schoharie County pistol-permit applicants should start with the Sheriff office route, county residence, training proof, and application packet.

A Schoharie County pistol-permit file starts with the Sheriff office, not with a rumor from the gun counter or a half-remembered state rule. Application packets are available online, and the in-person counter is at the Sheriff’s Office at 157 Steadman Way in Howes Cave during weekday business hours.
The early checklist is simple but important: Schoharie County residence, age 21 or older, no disqualifying criminal conviction, and proof of a qualified firearms safety training course. Those pieces belong in the folder before the applicant starts chasing signatures, photos, notary steps, or appointment details.
That matters in a county where errands can mean a long drive from Middleburgh, Richmondville, Sharon Springs, Cobleskill, or one of the smaller hill towns. A missed certificate or old address can turn one trip into two.
This is not legal advice and does not decide whether anyone qualifies. It is a routing note. Use the Sheriff office as the front door and keep every receipt, form, class certificate, and office note together. Firearms paperwork is not a place to rely on memory.
