Yates pistol permits changed the reference map for movers

Yates County pistol-permit applicants should check the county page for mover reference rules, fees, photos, fingerprinting, and address-change timing.

A Yates County pistol-permit question has one helpful clue for movers: the reference map is not as narrow as people may remember. Someone moving from another New York county can apply in Yates right away, and references may come from both Yates County and the previous county. Someone moving from another state can also apply right away, with references from any state or county.

That does not make the process instant. Yates lists fees, fingerprinting through IdentoGO, four required photos, references who have known the applicant for at least one year, and an application process that can take three to six months. Address changes must be made within 30 days of moving.

The practical point is organization. A person coming into Penn Yan, Dundee, Rushville, Keuka Park, or a house along the lake may have old-county references in one place and new address papers in another. That split is easy to lose track of during a move.

This is not legal advice. Keep old-county references, new address proof, photo receipt, fingerprinting appointment, fee notes, and county clerk messages in one place. When the county clerk asks for a detail, the answer should not be buried in a moving box.
