East Aurora's Roycroft Campus Anchors Its Main Street Story

East Aurora's Roycroft Campus explains why this Erie County village carries an arts-and-crafts identity near its Main Street core.

East Aurora’s Roycroft story sits close to the village center, with the Roycroft Campus at 31 South Grove Street and Main Street life nearby. That makes the arts-and-crafts feeling easy to notice while you are already walking, shopping, or looking for lunch.

The campus is a National Historic Landmark and Path Through History site tied to Elbert Hubbard, the Roycrofters, and the early 1900s Arts and Crafts Movement. The National Park Service record gives the campus a 1900 to 1924 period of significance. Those dates are helpful because they keep the story from becoming a vague “old village” label. This was a real craft-era place, with workers, printers, metalwork, books, furniture, ideals, and a whole lot of confidence.

The modern campus still gives visitors something to hold onto. The restored Roycroft Inn, the Copper Shop Artisan Gallery and Gift Shop, and tours of original buildings, grounds, and museum exhibits give the Roycroft name rooms, porches, shop windows, and paths.

East Aurora also backs the story with local preservation work. Its Historic Preservation Commission dates to 1987, and the Roycroft Campus is treated as a historic district. For landmark properties, the commission reviews major exterior changes through a certificate of appropriateness process.

That care shows up in the feel of the village. East Aurora is more than a pleasant Erie County stop with cafes and storefronts. It has a craft story close enough to touch, and the village has chosen to keep that story visible.
